Many cities in these areas lost a third of their population after the wall came down, but most of the cities boast beautiful medieval centers and are rich with history. ![]() ![]() Most of the road trip centered on the states of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) and Thuringia (Thüringen) which were part of the old GDR (East Germany). It started as a trip to see many of the significant sites associated with Luther like Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Erfurt, Eisenach, and Wartburg Castle but then expanded to include other historical sites in the area and a visit to a collection of UNESCO sites including: Bauhaus and its sites in Weimar and Dessau, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, Classical Weimar, Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, Museum Island in Berlin, the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany, and Wartburg Castle as well as the Elbe Riverside UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. ![]() ![]() In preparation for the 2017 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Chris (the Amateur Traveler) took a road trip through “Luther Land” and the heart of Germany.
